Bullying means aggressive behavior to hurt or cause discomfort to another person. Bullies always have more power than victims. Their power comes from size, strength, status, and support within the peer group.
Use superior strength or influence to intimidate someone and/or force them to do something, like to oppress.
Bullying can be;
- Name calling
- Text bullying
- School bullying
- Verbal bullying
- Cyber bullying
- Physical bullying
We can divide bullying into three-
- Physical bullying
2. Verbal bullying
A person's feelings are hurt through insults, name calling, and spreading rumors, gossiping and homophobic comments.
3. Social bullying
A person is excluded from the group and events through threatening words and actions.
What are the effects of bullying at schools ?
Bullying can lead to serious psychological and mental health and suicide. Bully victims are between 2 - 9 times more likely to commit suicide than non victims according to studies done by Yale University. Bullying is also a serious problem in African schools. Prof. Nita Corene De Wet wrote about Bullying in South African schools now I am writing about bullying in Tanzanian schools. I know its a very serious problem here as well. Other serious effects of bullying are as follows-
- Sleepless and loss of appetite
- Poor academic performance
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Skip/withdraw from school
- Sadness/Loneliness
- Fear
HOW TO STOP BULLYING
- Most school programs should address bullying eg. cancelling
- Students, Teachers and Parents should all be aware of how serious bullying can be hindering education success. Parents involvement will make the program meaningful and effective
- Even Teachers are being bullied in classroom setting , many times through name calling. Help everyone out there to know what bullying is and how bad it is.
